Retrofit 2050 Report: Critical Challenges for Urban Transitions https://www.retrofit2050.org.uk/retrofit-2050-report-critical-challenges-for-urban-transitions/ Wed, 09 Apr 2014 12:27:00 +0000 http://mappedsites.cardiff.ac.uk/retrofit2050/?p=538 view

As the work of the Retrofit 2050 project draws to a close, a recent report presents key findings from across the six universities involved to explore Critical Challenges for Urban Transitions.
Scaling up retrofit presents a number of critical challenges for the transition to urban sustainability. Drawing together insights from the EPSRC Retrofit 2050 project the report sets out key success factors that need to be in place to deliver sustainable futures for UK cities. These insights suggest that eight key critical success factors will need to be in place to deliver sustainable futures for UK cities.
The report can be found here.

The Retrofit 2050: Policy and Practice Conference will take place in London on 12th March to conclude the project and disseminate key findings. This three-year research programme has taken a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to retrofit and this event will offer practical insights into the processes that could underpin the transition to urban sustainability. The objective of this event is to communicate and disseminate the findings in a practical manner to policy makers, practitioners, local governments, property owners, and third-sector organisations interested in the future of retrofit in the built environment.

Places for the final Retrofit 2050 academic conference are filling up fast, with a limited number of spaces still available. The conference will include presentations around the themes of:

  • Governing urban retrofit;
  • The dynamics of urban retrofit transitions;
  • Modelling urban transitions and pathways; and
  • Steering and navigating sustainable urban transitions.

Taking place in Cardiff on the 12th and 13th of February 2014, it will share findings from across the Retrofit 2050 project, engage with transitions research from across the world and identify priorities for future research.

For more information or to register a place please contact andersonc4@cardiff.ac.uk or huntm3@cardiff.ac.uk.

New book explores urban retrofitting for sustainability to 2050 https://www.retrofit2050.org.uk/new-book-explores-urban-retrofitting-for-sustainability-to-2050/ Wed, 29 Jan 2014 12:10:00 +0000 http://mappedsites.cardiff.ac.uk/retrofit2050/?p=535 view

‘Urban Retrofitting for Sustainability: Mapping the Transition to 2050’, edited by Tim Dixon, Malcolm Eames, Miriam Hunt and Simon Lannon of the Retrofit 2050 project and published by Earthscan Routledge, brings together interdisciplinary research on the financing tools, governance, technologies and systems innovation that would underpin widespread retrofitting of the built environment between the present day and 2050.

Although new zero-carbon buildings are an important part of any low carbon transition, but in existing cities it must occur alongside the transformation of the current building stock and infrastructure. Including contributions from experts in systems dynamics, governance, urban design, renewable energy technologies and water management, the book aims to illuminate some of the key changes and challenges that lay ahead as part of a transition to a sustainable built environment.

The book can be found here.
